Please note, linen can be used to fill gaps and protect breakable items also.

Fill gaps in your boxes with linen or packing paper to stop them from moving around when they are in transit. Label your box with Fragile stickers. Make sure your boxes are strong and secure.
Protect your furniture with covers, making sure that your furniture is clean and dry before covering. Cushions and other soft furnishings should be wrapped or covered with plastic. Beds and other furniture, where appropriate, should be dismantled and items wrapped individually to protect them. All mattresses should be covered with mattress protectors.
The best way to start to pack up your goods is one room at a time.

To get the most out of your storage space here are a few tips to help make it easy.

To fully utilise your storage space it is best to start with a plan:-

  • Heavy items which won’t be damaged can be placed on the floor utilising the appropriate protection covers.
  • Light items can then be stacked on top to utilise the height of your storage space.
  • Remember to place the items which you need to access regularly near the front of your storage space.
  • Make sure you leave some passage ways so the you can also access the items at the rear of your storage space.
  • To make your stored items more accessible consider hiring shelves so that you can easily slide boxes in and out.
  • Boxes that are clearly labelled will mean items can be easily identified and accessed.  Label the side and top of each box and store with label visible.

Furniture which can be disassembled and flat packed on its side will leave you more space in your storage space and is easier to lift and transport.

Remember to cover and protect your items appropriately and not to place sharp items on top of items which can be easily damaged such as leather lounges etc.

White goods such as fridges and freezers should be dry and clean when being stored. It is best to leave the doors of these items ajar for air circulation. A deodoriser placed in these items can help to ensure they remain fresh.

Items that are fragile should clearly identified and be placed where they will not be knocked.

All batteries should be removed from items when they are stored to help to protect these items from leaks and corrosion.

When storing clothes or other linen remember to protect the items by using naphthalene or moth balls.

All items which may tarnish or rust should be protected before storing.

Ensure all petrol and oil is emptied from all machinery before storing.

Ensure all gas bottles are emptied before storing.

Items which should not be stored include:-

  • Petrol and gasoline
  • Paints and thinners
  • Solvents, chlorine and acids
  • All combustible and explosive items
  • Any illegal or stolen items
  • Living and perishable items including plants
  • All hazardous products and items
